We recently chatted to Sidra Aleem, Cohort 2 student, who recently graduated from DCU to ask her about her new job with Ubotica, a space and earth observation Irish indigenous company based in DCU Alpha campus in Glasnevin. Sidra is working as an AI Engineer developing AI models to address diverse use cases in remote sensing and Earth observation.

As you reflect back on your time at ML-Labs, what was the main takeaway of your doctoral experience?
The PhD experience provided me with a valuable opportunity to conduct research, equipped me with the necessary technical skills, and allowed me to learn and collaborate with fellow PhD students. These skills continue to support and strengthen me in my current role.
Can you tell us more about your research at Ubotica Technologies?
At Ubotica, I am actively involved in multiple research projects across various aspects of AI for space and satellite applications. My work primarily focuses on developing and exploring AI models to address diverse use cases in remote sensing and Earth observation. In addition, I am responsible for the efficient deployment of these models on the satellites, where they must operate within resource constraints such as limited computational capacity and low power availability.
What made you lean towards a career in industry after you finished your PhD?
After my PhD, I wanted to pursue a career in industry, but I was also drawn to roles that would allow me to continue conducting research. My current position provides that opportunity, where I get to tackle challenging AI problems, explore new ideas, and see the real-world impact of my work in space and satellite applications.
What advice would you have to our 2nd year PhD candidates?
Try to find a balance between exploring new ideas and starting to focus on your research. Do not be afraid to ask for feedback or collaborte, working with others will help you learn efficiently and boost your confidence. Everyone’s PhD journey is different, so try not to compare yourself to others and focus on your own progress. And above all, take care of your mental health as looking after yourself is what will keep you motivated in your PhD journey.
