Effects of Error & Expertise on Example-Based Explainable AI (XAI)
My completed PhD research focused on enhancing user trust and understanding in “black-box” deep learning systems through XAI approaches. It addressed two key challenges: identifying strategies to explain black-box systems when they are in error, and assessing the effectiveness of these explanations for users with varying levels of expertise. The research evaluated example-based explanation strategies via comprehensive user studies and culminated in the development of a novel explanation algorithm, the Altered Neighbours Method (ANM).
